Count Alphonse de Poitiers founded Villeréal as a bastide in 1265; its layout follows a medieval grid plan.

Culture

The historic townscape includes medieval half-timbered houses with projecting upper floors and traditionally enclosed gardens. The central market hall has a rare upper floor made of wattle and daub.
