Clairac: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The historic heritage of Clairac includes the Église Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens and the Font'Grand. The Église Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens is a Benedictine abbey church dating from the 12th century, which became the parish church in the 17th century and was listed as a Monument historique in 1996. The Font'Grand on rue Gambetta is a historic fountain with a wash house; its reservoir, covered by a rib vault, dates from the 16th century, and the wash house was renovated in the 1990s.

Culture

The Ancien couvent dit Maison des Dames de la Foy was founded through a royal endowment when the Edict of Nantes was revoked, in a predominantly Protestant setting. Together with the Abbey of Clairac and the adjoining church, the Maison des Dames de la Foy forms a religious complex. Until the French Revolution, it taught girls to read and write and instructed them in their religious duties.

The Maison à pans de bois at 2 rue Broustet is currently used as a museum. The building has a brick base, two storeys made of brick and timber with a rafter pattern, wooden mullioned windows and a projecting wooden gallery. On Place Viçoze, a commemorative plaque recalls tolerance.

The guided tour “Visite de Clairac entre Guyenne et Gascogne” starts on Thursdays at 10 a.m. at the Halle de Clairac and lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes. The guided tour “Clairac et les bords du Lot” also starts at the Halle de Clairac on Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. and lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Nature and Trails

Clairac has a beach on the banks of the Lot, where seasonal bathing is available from 1 July to 31 August. Clairac is also located on a variant of the GR®654-Est Way of St James, which connects Bergerac with Montréal-du-Gers.

Loop trail no. 121 leads to the banks of the Lot and then through some of Clairac’s historic streets. It is a 5 km hiking route that partly passes through the town; the walking time is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, with a cumulative elevation gain of 60 metres.

Cycling and Water

The Pont de Roussanes–Clairac Circuit is an easy 12.5 km road cycling route with 55 metres of elevation gain. The Point Information Touristique de la Halle offers VTC and e-bike rental; cycling routes are also available.

Local History

The origins of Pruneau d’Agen are associated with the activities of monks from Clairac Abbey in the 13th century. They grafted local plum trees with Damascus plums brought from Syria.
