Fargues-sur-Ourbise: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Fargues-sur-Ourbise, the Saint-Cyr Church and its fortified enclosure are protected as historic monuments. The church was listed by decree of 2 January 1929, and the fortified enclosure by decree of 26 July 1933. Saint-Cyr Church is a 16th-century building with a five-sided apse, a nave with a star-vaulted ceiling, and flamboyant tracery in the windows. The cemetery surrounding Saint-Cyr Church is enclosed by high walls with loopholes and partially preserved battlements.

Culture

The Tour d’Avance Hospitaller commandery was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century and is mentioned for the year 1260. The Tour d’Avance is a four-storey rectangular ashlar tower with a projecting stair tower and a spiral staircase. A rubble-stone boundary wall connects the Tour d’Avance with a chapel made of ashlar located to the south.

The parish church of Saint-Julien was probably built before the 14th century. It houses a 17th-century wooden Pietà, which has been protected as a movable historic monument since 1973. The covered funerary gallery of Lumé is commonly referred to locally as the “Tomb of Gargantua”.

Nature and Trails

The Ourbise rises in the hamlet of Saint-Julien. The Campet state forest is used year-round for walking, picnicking and themed excursions. The circular trail through Campet state forest starts at the car park of the picnic area in Campet Forest and passes by the Saint-Joseph Forest Museum.

The “Fargues-sur-Ourbise, an Island in the Forest” circular trail is of moderate difficulty, 11.7 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 105 metres and takes approximately three hours.

The Centre Départemental de la Nature et des Pratiques Cynégétiques presents local biodiversity through a permanent exhibition, observation stations and discovery trails. It has two designated walking trails, including a fun circular trail suitable for younger children and a three-kilometre loop.

The circular trail through Campet state forest also leads to the Maison de la Nature, which presents permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Local Tradition

On the third Sunday in April, several thousand people come to Fargues-sur-Ourbise; on this day, the town becomes the “Asparagus Capital”.
