Culture and History

Today, only the bricked-up and severely damaged south portal of the Romanesque Saint-Martin Church, which probably dates from the 12th century, remains. The church was ravaged during the Wars of Religion; in 1595, its condition was described as “almost completely dilapidated.”

The parish church of Saint-Martin is located in the village of Auradou. The manor house at La Calcinie is also located in Auradou. The La Calcinie estate includes an agricultural shed, a plum-drying oven and a dovecote. Remains of the La Calcinie manor house survive in a poor state of preservation.

The Grézac burial alleys consist of two monuments on a rocky outcrop above the chapel of Grézac and are also known as “the Englishmen’s graves.” The ruins of the presumably Romanesque Saint-Clair de Grézac Church stand on the Grézac plateau. It fell into disrepair in the 18th and 19th centuries and became a ruin in the 20th century.

The Domaine de Rivals is a manor house. Two presumably demolished round towers flank its northeast wing; the ruins of a third defensive tower are visible in the southeast. The hamlet of Rival is said to have been first mentioned in 1472.

Hiking

The Penne-d’Agenais–Auradou route is 23 kilometres long and passes through steep hills and along extended plateau sections. It is considered one of the most challenging routes in the département. Walking times of 6 hours 15 minutes, 4 hours and 3 hours are given for the route.

Food and Wine

At Côtes des Oliviers, cellar tours are available on request. During the season, tours of the orchards and plum-drying ovens are offered.

Côtes des Oliviers produces red wine, rosé, dry white wine, sweet white wine and a sparkling wine made using the traditional method, as well as walnuts and plums from the clay-and-limestone terroir.
