History and Architectural Heritage
The 19th-century land register preserves a medieval town plan at Montaut-le-Jeune with four perpendicularly arranged streets, a central square and an extensive defence system consisting of a moat, gates and towers. At the northwestern corner of the fortifications, a partially preserved round tower and a connected section of the perimeter wall remain.
The local architectural heritage includes the Église Saint-Pierre. Its present structure presumably dates essentially from the 15th and 16th centuries. At the same time, the church has a 13th-century bell gable with five arcades between the turrets. The chancel contains wall frescoes that were discovered beneath the plaster and recently restored.
Hiking
The “Montaut, la randonnée des crêtes boisées” hike starts in Montaut, is marked with coloured waymarks, covers 10.7 km and has an elevation gain of 195 m. It initially follows sections of the GR 636 “Traversée du Périgord” and the GR 654 of the Vézelay Way of St James, before returning along a wooded ridge.
The “Montaut, la balade du prieuré” walk mainly follows shaded paths. Along the way, it showcases the traditional architecture of the Haut-Agenais Périgord, with dovecotes, farmhouses and characterful houses. The “Montaut, la boucle de Lafaurie” loop alternates between shaded paths, the valley floor and broad open paths offering panoramic views of Biron, Born and Monflanquin.
