History

The ruins of Château de Freundstein were classified as a historic monument by decree of 27 April 1922. Château de Freundstein was mentioned in 1297 and was divided between Murbach Abbey and the Bishop of Strasbourg before being granted as a fief to the Waldner family. Access to the ruins of Château de Freundstein is difficult and dangerous.

A small chapel at Freundstein was built near the Ferme-auberge du Freundstein during the First World War. The current building of Ferme du Gerstacker dates from the 18th century. As early as 1558, Ferme du Gerstacker was jointly transferred by Murbach Abbey to the hamlets of Goldbach, Altenbach and Neuhause. It served as a communal summer pasture for the residents of the villages.

The Chapelle du Sudel was built in 1931 in memory of French soldiers who died in the First World War. Firstacker is a memorial site commemorating the First World War, where heavy fighting took place.

Routes and Landscapes

The Circuit du Gerstacker passes through forests and high-altitude pastures and offers views of the valley. The Gerstacker VTT FFC No. 35 is a sporty route through the high-altitude pastures of the Hautes-Vosges d’Alsace.

The Circuit du Firstacker is a 27.70-kilometre mountain biking route with 968 metres of ascent that passes through Goldbach-Altenbach. The Col Amic VTT FFC No. 33 route leads to Col Amic, a prominent point on the ascent to the Grand Ballon, and allows visitors to discover the mountain villages of Goldbach-Altenbach.
