The fortifications of Neuf-Brisach have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2008 as part of the Fortifications of Vauban.

Culture

The Musée Vauban was founded in 1957 and is located on the ground floor of the Porte de Belfort. In two exhibition rooms, it presents the history of Neuf-Brisach, Vauban’s work and the town’s UNESCO status.

The parish church of Saint-Louis was built from 1732 to 1736 according to plans by Chevalier and consecrated on 12 October 1777. After its complete destruction in the bombings of 5 and 6 February 1945, it was faithfully restored over a construction period of 30 years.

The fortifications are partly classified as a Monument historique and partly listed as a Monument historique; they are therefore subject to partial heritage protection.

MAUSA Vauban occupies approximately 1,200 m² in a former casemate within the fortifications of Neuf-Brisach. The works of internationally renowned artists were applied directly to the walls of the casemate.

History

Neuf-Brisach was founded from scratch in 1698 on the Alsatian plain after the loss of Vieux-Brisach on the other side of the Rhine. Louis XIV chose the octagonal plan for Neuf-Brisach from three designs submitted by Vauban; it has survived to this day. The town is considered the only example of Vauban’s third fortification system and his most highly developed urban-planning project.

Nature
