At the end of the Mittlach Valley lies Altenweiher, a glacier lake characteristic of the Vosges, situated in cirques heavily eroded by Quaternary glaciers. The lake lies at an altitude of 926 metres and is surrounded by the peaks of Kastelberg and Rainkopf. The Altenweiher dam was built between 1886 and 1893 and was first filled in 1894.

Nature
Mittlach is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park. Parts of the municipality of Mittlach belong to Natura 2000 sites, including areas at Seeberg, on the southern slope of Kastelberg, at the foot of Schweiselwasen, and between Schnepfenriedkopf and Col du Platzerwasel.
Culture and History
The Musée de l’Ambulance Alpine is located at 9 Rue Raymond Poincaré, 68380 Mittlach. The Mairie-école of Mittlach was built in 1912 and housed one of six alpine medical stations in the Vosges massif. During the First World War, the Mairie-école housed the French rear medical service; the site has been preserved almost in its original condition.
The Mittlach–Metzeral historical circular trail has 10 numbered panels and 9 explanatory panels. It conveys the impact of the First World War on the buildings of both municipalities and on the people who experienced the horrors of the war in this landscape.
Regional Traditions
The Ferme du Rothenbach offers guided tours of its stables, cheese dairy and maturing cellar, followed by a tasting. Its farm shop offers farmhouse cheese, homemade sausages and regional products. The Ferme du Rothenbach has been a family business for four generations, keeping Vosges cattle and continuing the traditional production of cheese.
