Thisted Municipality combines the wide landscapes of western Thy with marked trails, coast, culture and remarkable natural diversity. Particularly characteristic is Thy National Park, with 49 marked hiking trails. The western part of Thy was shaped by centuries of drifting sand and includes coast, dunes, dune heaths, lakes and dune plantations. The area's geological history is also evident: approximately 7,000 years ago, a large part of what is now Thisted Municipality was covered by the Littorina Sea.
Nature and landscape
The Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve is Denmark's largest wildlife reserve and encompasses Europe's largest dune heath. Isbjerg rises 56 metres above sea level there, making it the highest point in the Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve. In the northwestern part of Tved Dune Plantation, the bird tower in Sårup stands high on the old coastal cliff. From there, there is an especially good view over the inner, enclosed areas of the Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve.
Agger Tange is designated as an EU bird protection area. Seals can often be spotted from the southern tip of Agger Tange. Thus, different landscape types exist side by side in the area: dunes and heath, lakes and plantations, as well as stretches of coast and protected natural areas.
Trails and routes
Thisted Municipality has an extensive network of cycling and nature trails, making it possible to enjoy nature as well as commute safely by bicycle and on foot. In addition to the hiking trails in the national park, the marked hiking route runs from the ferry port on Agger Tange through Thy National Park to Hanstholm and onward to Bulbjerg.
Longer routes are also part of the regional trail network. The Vestkystruten is identical to National Cycle Route 1. It starts at the Agger ferry port and runs north for more than 100 kilometres, passing Bulbjerg. In Vilsbøl Plantation, there is a seven-kilometre mountain bike trail classified as easy. Additional loops are 1.9 kilometres and moderately difficult, and one kilometre and difficult, respectively. For riders, the marked Rideruten Thy is up to 100 kilometres long. It runs from the southernmost part of Thy National Park near Lodbjerg to the northernmost part of Thisted Municipality near Bulbjerg.
Culture and history
The history of Thy can be explored at Thisted Museum through seven permanent exhibitions. A modern archaeological exhibition covers, among other things, mining in the Stone Age and Iron Age farmers. It also deals with the Kallerup find, a Bronze Age discovery that attracted international attention in 2019.
At the Hanstholm Bunker Museum, the history of the Second World War, the German fortifications, and the people and weapons associated with the bunkers of the Atlantic Wall are the main focus. In summer, visitors can ride the old ammunition train through some of the large bunkers. Museum Thy also shares its knowledge through exhibitions, guided town tours, lectures, a museum education service, articles, books and digital outreach.
In Thisted, Christiansgave has an open-air theatre with seating for 300 people and a lawn area for 1,000 seated spectators. The grounds also include a fully equipped nature workshop and a playground with carved wooden figures. In Stenbjerg, the landing place for coastal fishermen is a traditional feature of the village; the buildings at Stenbjerg Landingsplads date from around 1900.
Arrival and orientation
Thisted Municipality can be reached by bus, train and ferry; corresponding transport connections are also available within the municipality. If the nearest bus stop is too far away, Flextur or Plustur can be booked. Thy National Park Centre has a 300-square-metre interpretation room. A landscape model there provides an overview of the national park's landscape character, trails, towns, experiences and stories. The national park centre has public toilets that are open almost around the clock all year round.
Water and coast
Cold Hawaii in Thy comprises 31 registered surf spots on the west coast of Thy, from Agger Tange in the south to just north of Hanstholm. In Klitmøller, surf camps offer schools and camps where visitors can try surfing. Since summer 2022, floating accommodation in the form of water shelters has also been available in the marinas of Agger, Doverodde, Vilsund and Amtoft.
Local life in Thisted
The town of Thisted is home to, among other places, Bryggen restaurant and Café Baghuset, a popular brunch and lunch venue in the pedestrian zone. In this way, the town complements the natural and coastal areas with its own urban meeting point.
