Stenbjerg between dunes, coastal paths and history
Stenbjerg combines the vastness of Thy National Park with impressive traces of coastal and fishing history. The village lies at the heart of the national park, surrounded by the sea, dunes, dune heathlands and Stenbjerg Klitplantage. Those looking for a holiday apartment for varied days will find an idea for a trip here in which nature, hiking and regional history stand closely side by side – without every activity having to be the same kind of experience.
Dune landscapes and trails for different daily plans
Stenbjerg Klithede is designated as a Natura 2000 site and forms part of a 680-hectare protected dune landscape on the west coast of Thy. The heath is part of a type of natural environment that is very rare by European standards. Characteristic heathland plants, as well as breeding cranes and wood sandpipers, find a habitat there. For planning your trip, this primarily means that in Stenbjerg you can experience the landscape not only as a backdrop, but also through different trail lengths and landscape areas.
The Stenbjerg Kultursti is a 6.2 km circular route. It begins at Stenbjerg Landingsplads, leads through the dunes to Stenbjerg and returns via Stenbjerg Båke and the beach. If you would like to plan a shorter route, you can choose the marked 1.2 km Stenbjerg Vest hiking trail, which begins at a car park on Stenbjergvej. The Gravshøjs route is 3.5 km long and follows an ancient coastal cliff from the Stone Age as well as several Bronze Age burial mounds. These differences allow you to choose how to spend your day according to distance, landscape and historical interest.
Another option is the yellow-marked Embak route. The 5.7 km trail leads through varied, hilly woodland to the wetlands of Bislet and Embak Vand. This means that Stenbjerg offers different facets: a coastal path through dunes, a shorter marked hike, a route featuring prehistoric traces and a woodland trail.
Coastal culture, artists and rescue history
At Stenbjerg Landingsplads, the Stenbjerg Redningshus commemorates the local rescue history. The building was constructed from red bricks in 1931 and is structurally protected as a historic building. The Stenbjerg Redningsmuseum displays, among other things, a rescue boat from 1892. The small equipment sheds at the landing place also tell stories of the past: local fishermen built them around 1900. They were not homes, but bear witness to the time when fishermen earned their living through dangerous fishing trips on the North Sea.
Stenbjerg Båke is a historic sea mark and was erected as part of a system of 23 sea marks built along the Jutland west coast in 1884–85. Käte Lassens Hus and the black shed to the west also convey the story of the artists who stayed in Stenbjerg and used people and nature as motifs for their art. In the dunes near Stenbjerg Kirkevej lies a German observation bunker from the Second World War. Information about the war and the Atlantic Wall is available there. Stenbjerg Church itself was built in 1895.
Information for your stay
The Thy National Park information centre at Stenbjerg Landingsplads is open daily from 12:00 to 16:00 from 27 March to 31 October 2026. This period can be taken into account when planning a stay in 2026. A recurring annual event is Stenbjergdag: it takes place every summer on the second Sunday in July at Stenbjerg Landingsplads and features musical entertainment, a fish buffet and rescue demonstrations. During Stenbjergdag, fresh, locally caught fish is served beside the water at the old houses of the landing place.
You can also take the journey into account when choosing your accommodation. Those not travelling by car can take a train or bus to Thisted and continue from there to Stenbjerg on bus 313. When searching for a holiday apartment, it is worth first deciding on the daily rhythm you want: Would you like to explore different hiking routes, learn about coastal history or plan a stay centred around Stenbjergdag?
