Discover Hanstholm
Accommodation in Hanstholm
A rotating lens light, a wheelchair-accessible route to the coastal cliffs, and the chance to hear or see red deer: Hanstholm offers a wide range of discoveries. At Hanstholm Fyr, history and experiences in nature come together; at the harbour, fish auctions and deep-sea fishing trips are among the activities on offer. Which of these you want to shape your stay can also guide your search for a holiday apartment.
Lighthouse history and discoveries for different generations
Hanstholm Fyr was built in 1842–43 high on Hanstholmknuden, near Hansted Kirke. It was Denmark’s first rotating lens light. Its construction period, location and technical innovation offer different ways to experience the same landmark: through history, landscape and lighthouse technology.
At the Bådshuset at Hanstholm Fyr, children and adults can explore the Hanstholm Vildtreservat interactively and learn more through play. Another option is the modern exhibition building at the Bunkermuseum Hanstholm, which is fully accessible to people with limited mobility and to prams. Check the latest accessibility information before your visit.
Trails to the coastal cliffs and through the national park
The Dronningestien at Hanstholm Fyr is 1 km long and wheelchair-accessible. It leads from the lighthouse garden to the coastal cliffs, offering views over the Hanstholm Vildtreservat. The route’s length, starting point and destination provide a clear framework for planning your day. Trail conditions can vary; check the latest information before your visit.
The Redningsvejen hiking route takes a different course: it runs through Thy National Park to Hanstholm and onwards to Bulbjerg. While the Dronningestien focuses on a short, measured route and views over the reserve, the Redningsvejen describes a route through the national park with named destinations. Conditions can vary seasonally.
Wildlife and birdwatching
The Hanstholm Vildtreservat is home to Europe’s largest dune heath and is a protected refuge for animals and birds. From Hanstholm Fyr, visitors may be lucky enough to see or hear red deer in the reserve. Such sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. If you’re travelling with children, you can therefore treat wildlife watching as a possibility rather than a fixed part of your itinerary.
Nearby, Roshage is a place to watch migrating seabirds, particularly during strong westerly winds in autumn. Birds can be observed from the car park at Roshage or in the surrounding area; sightings depend on conditions. If you plan to start from the car park, take the current parking situation into account as well.
Fish auctions and deep-sea fishing at the harbour
Hanstholm Fiskeauktion is Denmark’s largest fish auction. Visitors can experience it at 06:45 on weekdays. This is a specific early start for your day’s itinerary; check the current visitor schedule in advance, as times may change.
Deep-sea fishing trips to “Gule Rev” are also offered from Hanstholm Havn. If you’d like to plan a trip, check the latest departure times in advance. This gives you two different harbour experiences to choose from: an early look at the fish auction and a deep-sea fishing excursion.
Factor experiences into your holiday apartment search
When looking for a holiday apartment in Hanstholm, you can start with the kind of daily schedule you want. If you want to experience the auction, plan for an early weekday start; wildlife sightings depend more on the season and conditions, while a deep-sea fishing trip depends on current departures. This helps you distinguish between experiences that require specific scheduling and those that remain open-ended opportunities to observe nature.
