Discover Bedsted Thy: Forests, Trails and Local History
Bedsted Thy combines forest nature, trail experiences and a surprisingly rich local history. In Rønhede Plantation south of Bedsted, deciduous and coniferous trees alternate. Marked trails, Bronze Age burial mounds, a dog exercise forest and opportunities for fishing give your stay a range of different highlights. At the same time, Bedsted tells the story of its development into a railway town and preserves a remarkable historic architectural ensemble with Bedsted Church. Those planning a trip with varied interests will therefore find inspiration here for both active days and cultural discoveries.
Forest Trails and Nature Experiences in Rønhede Plantation
Rønhede Plantation has two marked hiking trails. The marked Rønhede hiking route is 2.4 km long and begins at the car park in the plantation. The plantation also includes a dog exercise forest. For trips with a dog, this can therefore be a separate point to include in your planning.
There is also a clearly described option for cyclists: the Rønhede MTB trail begins at the open area on Skovvej in Bedsted, is marked with blue arrows and is 5 km long. If you prefer to stay on the water, you can fish freely in all the lakes in Rønhede Plantation. The plantation lies south of Bedsted and is easily accessible from the town. A new passage is also being created between Bedsted and Rønhede Plantation. When choosing accommodation in Bedsted Thy, it may therefore be decisive whether forests, cycling, fishing or local history should be the main focus of your stay.
Bedsted Between Railway History and Architecture
Bedsted was established around 1880 as a railway town on the Thy railway line. The Bedsted Town Walk offers a narrative introduction to the town’s history, sharing both small and large stories from the area. At Thylandsgade 22, you will find Skovtrappen, an old doctor’s residence that has been converted into a garden and meeting place. Bedsted also has a new stone lookout point intended to show the way to the surrounding nature.
A special historical landmark is Bedsted Church. Its chancel and nave date from the Romanesque period, while the tower is Late Gothic. The altar is a work of the Late Renaissance and bears the year 1638. The church stands high on a hill with a fairly steep slope to the east. Those interested in ecclesiastical architecture and regional history can observe several periods in a single building here, but should take the hillside location into account when planning their visit.
Which Accommodation Suits Your Travel Plans?
A holiday apartment or holiday house in Bedsted Thy can sensibly be chosen according to your preferred daily rhythm. If you want to set off in the morning for forest trails, the Rønhede MTB trail or fishing, Bedsted’s location in relation to Rønhede Plantation to the south is an important point of reference. For a stay with a stronger cultural focus, the Town Walk, Skovtrappen and Bedsted Church can provide the framework for your explorations. The different themes can also be combined: a stay can begin with local history and later continue in the plantation with a marked route, disc golf or a nature experience.
Bedsted Multipark includes a disc golf course with nine holes created by Thy Disc Golf. This adds another specific activity alongside hiking and mountain biking. Which activities you combine depends on your personal preferences and the composition of your travel group.
