Discover Skive Municipality – holiday apartment among nature, art and history

A particularly striking entrance to Skive Municipality leads to Spøttrup Castle: it is considered one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Denmark. The complex offers the chance to explore a genuine castle with moats, a castle tower and a knights’ hall. Spøttrup Castle was completed by the mid-1520s at the latest; Bishop Jørgen Friis completed the construction. Events, guided tours, markets and historical living-history activities are part of the programme year-round.

Nature

Skive Municipality has 500 hectares of municipal forests and natural areas. Within the municipality, Skive Plantage south of Skive covers 300 hectares, while Krabbesholm Forest in Skive is home to centuries-old oak trees. Larger natural areas are formed by the Flyndersø and Sønder Lem Vig nature parks, which together cover 3,900 hectares of varied nature. There are numerous marked hiking trails there. In addition, the two nature parks offer parking, basic overnight accommodation, picnic areas and service buildings.

Shelter sites are distributed throughout the municipality, with most options in Salling. Five municipal shelters in Skive Municipality can be reserved in advance. Spøttrup Sø is home to a diverse range of wildlife and birdlife; a path leads around the lake, and a birdwatching tower offers an immediate experience of nature.

Art

Skive Art Museum opens two special exhibitions every year. The permanent exhibition “Collection of Nature” exclusively presents works from the museum’s own collection. The museum also houses Billedskolen, which offers various activities for children and adults. The children’s and family exhibition “Kunstbyen” invites visitors to work creatively and learn about colours and shapes.

History

Glyngøre Kulturstation is a local museum housed in former railway buildings. It explores local history and the influence of the fjord on the people around Glyngøre. At the same time, it provides insight into the town of Glyngøre as well as the railway, fishing, industry and cultural life that shaped the area.

The history of Ørslev Kloster dates back to the second half of the 12th century. The protected garden and the forest around Ørslev Kloster are open to everyone. The old gardener’s house contains an exhibition about the history of the monastery.

Jenle is the historic artists’ home of the poet Jeppe Aakjær, where some of his best-known works were written. The Jenle Museum includes permanent and temporary exhibitions, as well as two small cinemas about Jeppe and Nanna Aakjær. Jenle hosts the Jenlefesten every year. The natural grounds of Jenle are open to visitors all year round, except during the Jenlefesten. Jenle’s outdoor areas, including Aakjær’s grave, can be visited free of charge.
