Ålbæk invites you to discover the coast as more than a backdrop for beach days: the Ålbæk Beach–Kås hiking route begins at Ålbæk Beach and heads south along the fjord, circling around Kås Hoved. The landscape adds geological, birdlife and historical traces to this coastal perspective. If you are looking for a holiday home in Ålbæk, you can choose your preferred focus for your vacation: time by the water, hiking, or natural and cultural history.

Beach and summer at Ålbæk Beach

Ålbæk Beach is 10 to 20 metres wide and consists of sand, gravel and shells. This mix shapes the narrow shoreline: alongside sand, gravel and shells are also part of the beach. Ålbæk Beach has held Blue Flag status since 1995. In the municipal profile, last revised in June 2022, bathing water quality is rated “excellent,” the highest category for bathing water. Every summer, events with nature guide Jesper Nielsen Krogh are held at the beach. If you would like to include one of these events in your plans, check the dates.

On foot from Ålbæk Beach to Kås

The Ålbæk Beach–Kås hiking route is marked with blue arrows. From Ålbæk Beach, it heads south along the fjord and circles around Kås Hoved. You can walk along the beach or, on some stretches, along the edge of the coastal cliff. The route passes close to Kås Sø; it also runs through unspoilt nature and past burial mounds. Along the way, it offers views of Venø, Thyholm, Jegindø and Mors. This route brings together coastal scenery, views and historical traces. If that is the mix you are looking for on a hike, you will find more here than a single view of the water.

Kås Hoved and the Kås Peninsula

Kås Hoved was protected in 1941 to preserve its natural environment. It is considered a geological attraction: deposits from three ice ages have been found in the coastal cliff. The Kås Peninsula brings together a lake, woodland, beach meadows and heathland; these habitats support a diverse range of flora and fauna. It is also a breeding ground for marsh, meadow and beach-meadow birds. Kås Skov is an oak forest inhabited by organisms that live only in ancient woodland. The heathland in the southern part of the protected area on the Kås Peninsula contains 18 prehistoric burial mounds. This means the natural area spans everything from geological traces in the coastal cliff to a clearly defined archaeological site in the southern heathland.

Historic routes and getting around

Kås Manor dates back to the early 14th century and is the ancestral home of the Kås family. A field path beside the long barrow near Ålbæk also has a historic connection to the manor: it is the old manor road leading there. The Kås Peninsula can be reached via a public road that passes Kås Hovedgård and leads to a car park by the beach. When looking for a holiday home in Ålbæk, your preferred focus can therefore help guide your plans: should your stay centre mainly on the beach, or on hiking and exploring Kås?
