Sundsøre on the Limfjord – Trails, Nature and Harbour
Sundsøre connects the Limfjord with marked hiking trails, a lively harbour, natural areas and traces of railway history. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can make their preferred daily activities the starting point when choosing a location: Should the trip focus primarily on hiking, the water, culture or regional culinary experiences?
Hiking between the Harbour, Coast and Nature
A special route is the Lavvanderuten of the Blue Walk. The marked point-to-point hiking route is 22.4 kilometres long and runs between Skive and Sundsøre. On the way to Sundsøre, the Blue Walk follows the Limfjord and passes coastal meadows and nutrient-poor grassland. The route is therefore a specific option for anyone who would like to include a longer hike in their travel plans. Take the length into account when planning your day and decide whether accommodation suited to extended excursions is right for your holiday.
The Sundsøre hiking route begins at the car park on the headland immediately south of the ferry terminal. From there, it passes the harbour and follows the coast before returning via Hvalpsundvej. The Lille Thise Sti offers shorter or differently oriented experiences: it leads from Sundsøre Harbour along the water to a natural area near Gl. Børsting and back to Sundsøre. A detour also takes you to a burial mound with beautiful views over the Limfjord. This allows you to combine active sections with special landscape experiences without choosing the same type of trail throughout.
Nature and Water on the Limfjord
North of Sundsøre lies an 8-hectare natural area with coastal meadows, a nutrient-rich fen and heathland. Visitors are allowed to explore the area, but should show consideration for nature and the grazing cattle. Sundsøre Odde offers good opportunities for observing seals. Those travelling with different interests can therefore alternate between a hike, a peaceful nature experience and a day by the water.
Sundsøre Beach has a bathing jetty, a basic ball court, and tables and benches in summer. At Sundsøre Harbour, you can head out onto the fjord, swim from the bathing jetties and use the sauna. Sundsøre Marina lies next to the ferry terminal for the Hvalpsund–Sundsøre route and is well protected from westerly winds. The Limfjord – Sundsøre – Branden kayaking route also begins at Sundsøre Harbour next to the ferry terminal to Hvalpsund. When choosing your accommodation, these different experiences on the water may be more important than a holiday focused solely on hiking.
History, Legend and Regional Specialities
Sundsøre Pakhus is a historic warehouse dating from 1927. It was built as part of the freight station for the M/F Hvalpsund railway ferry. The freight wagons contain unmanned tourist information about the area and about the history of railway transport, transportation and freight traffic. A sculpture of the Lindormen, made from oak in 2022, also stands at Pakhus. According to local legend, the headland at Sundsøre is the tail of this Lindormen.
Brænderiet Limfjorden is also part of the local character. The distillery offers guided tours throughout the year by prior arrangement, ending with tastings of various products made on site. Visitors can enjoy beer, whisky, rum, gin, schnapps and liqueur at the bar or on the terrace. This adds a regional culinary experience to a day by the water or a cultural exploration. If you choose a holiday apartment for your trip, this allows you to shape the rhythm of your day between excursions, time at the harbour and independent breaks.
