Grynderup and nearby Grynderup Sø
Accommodation in Grynderup
Near Grynderup lies Grynderup Sø, a restored, very shallow lake in northwestern Salling. It covers 140 hectares and forms part of a protected natural area with wet meadows and marshland. Meadows and reeds line the lake; the area provides a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. At the southern end, meadows and mudflats shape the shoreline. During migration, numerous wading birds stop there—a seasonal highlight for anyone planning an outing around nature watching.
A lake with a varied history
Grynderup Sø was drained in the mid-19th century and subsequently used for agriculture. The lake was later recreated as part of one of Denmark’s largest lake restoration projects. Construction took place in 2011, and the lake was inaugurated in August 2012. Its history therefore includes both its earlier drainage and agricultural use and its more recent restoration. The natural area today can also be explored as a landscape in transition.
Birdwatching from two spots
At the southern end is a double bird tower, the Twin Tower. From there, you can see across the southern part of the lake and its shallow-water areas. There is also a low birdwatching shelter on Grynderupvej, overlooking the northernmost part of the lake. The two observation points therefore offer views of different sections of the lake. If you time your outing to coincide with the migration of wading birds, you can focus on the meadows and mudflats in the south; specific sightings depend on the season.
A short circuit or a longer hike?
The northern circular route is listed as 4.7 kilometres and takes about an hour to walk. For a longer option, there is the 13-kilometre Grynderup Sø hiking route, marked with yellow arrows. The markings may change, so check them regularly when planning. These two distances help you gauge the scale of the outings: an approximately one-hour northern circuit and a considerably longer route.
The 13-kilometre route passes through pastures where animals graze. Be considerate and keep your distance; grazing may vary depending on the season. In wet weather, parts of the hiking route can be very wet, so waterproof footwear is recommended. Parking is available to the east and west of the lake, as well as on Grynderupvej along the route. If you choose your starting point based on parking, check the current conditions.
Finding your way at the northern end
Near the northern end of the lake, in a wooded area, there is a basic overnight campsite. A dry toilet is about 100 metres away, at the end of the wooded area in the direction of the cable ferry. The approximate distance and directions can help you find your way. Check the current status of the site and facilities before your visit.
The cable ferry is also relevant when planning: as of 31 August 2026, it was out of service. Before your trip, check whether it has resumed operating.
Choosing the right holiday apartment for your outing
When choosing a holiday apartment in Grynderup, your preferred pace for the day can be a useful guide: birdwatching from the two observation points, which face different parts of the lake; an approximately one-hour northern circuit; or the longer hiking route.
