Litenčice combines the landscape of the Litenčická pahorkatina with a remarkable collection of architectural and archaeological monuments. At its centre is Zámek Litenčice Castle, a two-storey, four-winged complex. It was created through Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical alterations to a Gothic fortress and has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958.

Culture and history

The historic character of the town also includes Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla Church. It dates from around 1700 and is one of the most important sights in Litenčice. Inside, it has four altars, including the main altar dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The last renovation took place from 1740 to 1760. The church grounds also contain a stone Baroque crucifix dating from 1757. The church itself is registered as a cultural monument, while Kaple Panny Marie Chapel forms part of Litenčice's preserved collection of monuments.

The Obecnice hill also reaches far back into the town's history: archaeological investigations uncovered 153 graves there dating from the period of the Great Moravian Empire. Cultural events held in Litenčice have also included a myslivecký ples, or hunters' ball, as well as an Únorový sokolský karneval, a February carnival organised by the Sokol association. Zámek Litenčice Castle is not open to the public.

Landscape and nature

Litenčice lies amid the Litenčická pahorkatina. Next to Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla Church stands the Jilm v Litenčicích tree, which is protected as a natural monument. The geological locality of Litenčice is also part of the town's natural heritage. It is a former sand quarry with Carpathian delta sands containing numerous fragments of macrofauna.

Because of a unique exposure in Carpathian sands and the breeding population of European bee-eaters, designation of the geological locality for protection is recommended. At the same time, it is designated as a geotourism attraction and an excursion site. Access is possible only with special permission, as the locality lies within a military area, a quarry or on private property.

Cycling routes

The Litenčické cyklotrasy form a network of signposted local cycling routes. They connect municipalities and places of interest in the gently hilly terrain of the Litenčická pahorkatina. The network comprises four circular routes with a total length of approximately 180 kilometres. The Velký Litenčický okruh runs through the centre of the Litenčická pahorkatina and connects Vyškov in the west of the region with Morkovice-Slížany in the east.

This places different geographical features in and around Litenčice side by side: the Obecnice hill, the gently hilly landscape of the Litenčická pahorkatina and a cycling network connecting several municipalities and places of interest. The town is also a transport hub where a Class II road from Prostějov to Kyjov meets a Class III road between Kroměříž and Litenčice.

Wine and events

The history of the castle is also connected with winegrowing. Vineyards had already belonged to Zámek Litenčice Castle since the 16th century; there is also a Renaissance wine cellar beneath the castle. On a favourably oriented slope, the Podstatzští Thonser family planted a vineyard with several grape varieties. These vineyards belonged to Zámek Litenčice Castle.
