Kelč: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Kelč combines a historic urban area with trails that provide different ways to explore the local culture and landscape. The Kelč educational trail comprises two circular routes: both can be walked or cycled. The shorter circular route passes through the town’s urban conservation or historic protected zone, while the longer circular route follows significant landscape features in the area surrounding the town.
Culture and History
The historic protected zone encompasses the core of the New Town as well as the Renaissance château complex with its landscaped park. It also includes Náměstí Square in Kelč. The birth houses of the linguist and Slavist František Pastrnek and the Moravian Enlightenment thinker and writer Tomáš Fryčaj stand there. This means that, within a small area, there are both urban-planning and biographical traces connected with the history of Kelč.
Kelč’s historical character is also reflected in its fortress, which was converted into a Renaissance château in the 1580s. The château is currently not open to the public. However, its complex with the landscaped park remains part of the historic protected zone. Another distinctive link to the town’s history is the original stone bridge dating from 1912. It is decorated with four pylons and hemispheres and is one of the few surviving concrete bridges in the region.
The Church of St Catherine represents a particularly broad historical span in Kelč. Its medieval origins have been documented; the present church was built between 1776 and 1784. The building is used for religious services and concert performances and has been a protected historic monument since 10 February 1992. Thus, this site brings together the church’s early history, its present form and its current use.
Museum
A dedicated introduction to the town’s history is provided by the museum in Kelč. It is located in the former old school building at Kelč 290. There is a room dedicated to the Křička siblings, as well as a permanent exhibition on pipe making. The museum also features the permanent exhibition “In the Footsteps of Kelč Pipe Making”, which specifically addresses the thematic focus on the history of the pipe-making craft.
Museum visits must be arranged exclusively by telephone and at least one day in advance. This is a specific visitor requirement for the former old school building and should be taken into account when planning a visit.
Things to Do
The cycling route “To the Kelč Château from Valmez” also passes through Kelč. The cycling route “To the Kelč Château from Valmez” is suitable for e-bikes, gravel bikes and mountain bikes. In Kelč, the route includes a stop to visit Náměstí Square. In doing so, it takes in a place that is part of the historic protected zone and is also home to the birth houses of František Pastrnek and Tomáš Fryčaj.
