Biskupice is one of the municipalities assigned to the ethnographic region of Luhačovické Zálesí. The village combines sacred landmarks, memorial sites, living traditions and various routes for cyclists and pedestrians to create a diverse picture.

Culture and history

One of Biskupice’s defining landmarks is the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was consecrated by Archbishop Jan Graubner on 16 August 1997. Every year in August, a pilgrimage takes place at the chapel around the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. A statue of the Virgin Mary also stands in the open space in front of the chapel. It was erected in 1946 by the now-dissolved Association of Catholic Women; in 2001, the statue was moved to the area in front of the chapel.

Several stone crosses preserve further traces of the village’s history. A cross erected in 1866 commemorates a cholera epidemic in Biskupice. Another, erected as early as 1752, was moved from the road to Velký Ořechov into a garden in 1932. The Liberation Monument has also changed location: it was made and presented to the residents on 1 May 1946, the first anniversary of the liberation of Biskupice, later moved to the main road, and is still located there today.

Near the centre of Biskupice, a Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the bank of the stream. It was created in 1796 on the commission of farmer Martin Vítek and is not an ordinary example of regional production from its time. North of Biskupice, a monument commemorates the crew of a crashed aircraft. The Romanian air gunner Gheorghe Popescu lost his life, while pilot Paul Lazaroiu was able to escape by parachute.

Traditions and events

The local Fašank tradition includes a procession of costumed groups with music, as well as singing and dancing. This tradition has always been maintained in Biskupice and is intended to be preserved for future generations. During the custom, people in masks are served doughnuts, pastries or meat, and above all supplied with schnapps and beer.

Another event is the Biskupice open-air cinema. The screenings take place at the TJ TATRAN football grounds; the open-air cinema was first held in 2018.

Getting around

For road bikes, the 11-kilometre Luhačovice–Biskupice circuit leads to Biskupice and then to the local airfield. The Small Spa Circuit is 22 kilometres long and is intended for trekking bikes and mountain bikes. It leads via Luhačovice and Biskupice to the local airfield, Řetechov and Pozlovice.

Another route is used by cyclists and pedestrians. Of the total 3,600 metres, 1,500 metres lie within the Biskupice cadastral area. From Ottovka, the route follows the right bank of the Luhačovický potok along a cycle path to the edge of Biskupice.

Getting there

Public bus routes with three stops run through Biskupice, as does a railway line with one stop. České dráhy currently offers no services at Biskupice u Luhačovic railway station; no České dráhy trains currently stop there.
