Vacation apartment in Luhačovice – spa architecture and mineral springs

In the center of Luhačovice, an urban heritage conservation zone forms the local core. At present, 40 objects, including buildings and works of art, are listed in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. Luhačovice therefore combines an unusually high density of protected heritage sites with visible spa architecture.

Culture

The museum in Luhačovice presents an ethnographic collection from the 1920s as well as more recent collections on the local spa tradition and history. The exhibition is supplemented by temporary exhibitions and accompanying programs for schools and the public. The history of the architecture can also be traced through individual buildings: In 1902, a building in Luhačovice was remodeled by Dušan Jurkovič from the original complex of two buildings of Janův dům in the Art Nouveau style. A first new building by Dušan Jurkovič was constructed in 1903–1904 in the national Art Nouveau style.

The Luhačovice Colonnade, designed by Oskar Poříška, follows the style of Dušan Jurkovič and connects his freestanding buildings into a compact spa center. The listed complexes also include Sluneční lázně. After careful reconstruction, the complex was reopened to the public and offers an exhibition in three thematic areas on the spa tradition. The unique open-air swimming pool with wooden changing cabins was built in 1903 and repaired and conserved in 1999.

The traditional Otevírání pramenů festival takes place on the second weekend of May. It combines the healing springs and impressive spa buildings with traditional costumes, Art Nouveau-style costumes, historic automobiles, dancing, and singing. A ride on the tourist railway has been one of the attractions for visitors to Luhačovice since 2005.

Springs

At the spring and at the Vincentka dispensing counter, visitors can taste the water cold or warmed. The Vincentka hall houses an interactive exhibition about the mineral waters of Luhačovice. Aloiska is the oldest mineral spring in Luhačovice; it produces 3 liters per minute and is tapped at a depth of 14 meters. The Nový Jubilejní spring has been open to the public since 2013.

Nature and routes

A hiking route of approximately 16 kilometers around Luhačovice offers views of the surrounding area and includes around 250 meters of elevation gain. The route is used by both cyclists and pedestrians. One shared section of the route is 3,600 meters long; 1,500 meters of it lies within the cadastral territory of Biskupice.
