The Krýza Crèche in Jindřichův Hradec is the world's largest folk mechanical Christmas crèche. The crèche contains around 1,400 figures of people and animals, 133 of which are moving.
Culture and History
The tour route through the chateau and castle complex of Jindřichův Hradec leads through buildings and interiors dating from the late Gothic period to the High Renaissance. It begins in the late Gothic Black Kitchen and ends in the Rondel music pavilion.
The former Minorite monastery is managed by the Jindřichův Hradec Museum and now serves as a cultural and educational centre. The Church of St John the Baptist and the Minorite monastery house permanent exhibitions on the religious art of Jindřichův Hradec, the “Tree of Life” and Tomáš Krýza’s anamorphic portrait. St John the Baptist is also one of the most valuable architectural monuments in South Bohemia.
Crafts and Media
Dům gobelínů presents the work of Marie Teinitzerová in a permanent exhibition on the history of weaving in Jindřichův Hradec. In the hands-on exhibition, visitors can watch hand weaving on horizontal and vertical looms. In 2026, Dům gobelínů will also offer creative workshops on traditional and newer crafts.
The Museum of Photography and Modern Visual Media offers the general public guided tours with practical demonstrations of the principles of image creation and recording. The permanent exhibition “The Power of Media” explores key moments in the history of photographic, film and audiovisual technology, as well as its social function.
Landscape
The Jindřichův Hradec–Nová Bystřice narrow-gauge railway line dates from 1897. It runs through the landscape of Česká Kanada towards the Austrian border.
The Jindrova educational trail follows a red-marked hiking route between Jindřichův Hradec and Malý Ratmírov and is approximately 13 kilometres long. Along the way, it follows the rocky bed of the Hamerský potok through the Jindřišské Valley, with its rocky slopes and rubble forests.
Cityscape and Sky
The prof. František Nušl Observatory in Jindřichův Hradec offers sky observations with telescopes in clear weather. The municipal lookout tower at the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady in Jindřichův Hradec is 68.3 metres high.
