Jemnice: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Jemnice is marked by the Historical Barchan Festival in June: it takes place every year after the Feast of Saint Vitus in Jemnice. At its heart is a race involving four messengers who deliver messages to their queen, Eliška Přemyslovna. The Barchan Race has been included in the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Traditional Folk Culture of the Czech Republic since 2014.

Culture and History

Jemnice Château was created by converting a royal castle that was founded at the beginning of the 13th century. In the 16th century, the castle was converted into a four-winged Renaissance château. After 1734, the château acquired a Baroque appearance based on a design by Anton Erhard Martinelli; the interiors were redesigned in the Empire style after 1818.

The Church of St. Stanislav was founded in the mid-14th century and rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 1580s. East of Jemnice, amid new development, stands the Gothic Church of St. Vitus. It is surrounded by a lime grove and belonged to a Franciscan monastery founded in 1455 by the brothers Albrecht, Hynek and Štěpán of Lichtenburk.

St. James is a landmark of the oldest part of the town, Podolí, and today stands on the site of an original princely court. An exploratory survey in 1974 uncovered the ground plan of a Romanesque rotunda.

Nature and Landscape

The Jemnice Arboretum is a 4.3-hectare botanical park established near the school in 1907. It lies at an altitude of 476 to 482 metres, includes a pond and a forest nursery, and was designed in the English style according to a plan by Karel Šiman of Libějovice, the château gardener and forestry expert. Selected trees are marked with signs and QR codes providing information about the respective species.

The marked Queen Eliška tourist circuit leads through the most interesting sights and monuments in the centre of Jemnice.
