History and Local Life

The first surviving written record of Horní Cerekev dates from 1361. The Baroque Church of the Annunciation of the Lord stands in the square in Horní Cerekev.

The Jewish cemetery is also part of the town’s historic character. It contains around 180 gravestones dating from the 18th century to the 1930s. The cemetery also features a small mortuary with a steep pyramidal roof.

Horní Cerekev Chateau is a surviving two-storey building with three wings and an arcaded courtyard; Zámecký rybník adjoins it to the south. The chateau is not accessible to visitors. The Půlnoční drak dragon boat race has been held every September since 2016 at Zámecký rybník in Horní Cerekev. During a training session there, visitors can try dragon boat paddling.

Landscape and Nature

On the road out towards Pelhřimov, there is a one-kilometre-long chestnut avenue planted at the end of the 19th century. On the road out towards Kamenice nad Lipou stands a protected ash tree estimated to be 200 years old.

The Horní Cerekev quarry is also one of the town’s notable natural features: shoals of perch, carp and bleak can be seen there; with a little luck, eels and catfish can also be spotted.

The ruins of Janštejn are located in the vicinity of Horní Cerekev. The Roštejn Chateau, Lisek and Havlův kopec are also nearby. Bražský kopec and Strahovice are located in the immediate surroundings.
