Nature Trail and Discoveries

The “Discovering Bory” nature trail comprises a total of 36 stations with information boards and three interactive elements. The approximately 6-kilometre-long trail leads through Dolní and Horní Bory. From the surroundings of Dolní Bory, it runs via the polder to Horní Bory. For the most part, the nature trail is also accessible with a pushchair; the section between stations 16 and 17 is more challenging, so a baby carrier is recommended for small children.

The nature trail includes an analemmatic sundial. It can be used to learn how a sundial works, and visitors can also sit there and enjoy the view across the landscape. At the Kamenolom Horní Bory station, information boards explain the history of the quarry and the extraction of the deposit.

Another station is the “Forest Ear” sound installation: a large wooden megaphone horn into which forest sounds can be transmitted and listened to. The nature trail also leads through Horní Bory to a geopark with wooden sculptures of native animals, which provides information about nature and geology.

Nature and Geology

Large blocks of serpentinized peridotite are exposed in the Horní Bory quarry, where gneiss is extracted. The quarry is a geotourist attraction (geotope) and an excursion site. A total of 55 mineral species have been found there.

The Mrázkova louka natural monument in Horní Bory protects a mosaic of wet cabbage thistle meadows, moss-covered nutrient-poor bog hollows on non-calcareous soil, and submontane mat-grass swards. Protected plants grow there, including round-leaved sundew, narrow-leaved cottongrass, marsh cinquefoil, and bog clubmoss.

Trails and Culture

Red- and yellow-marked hiking trails, as well as the “Mlynářská stezka” cycle route, run through the municipality of Bory.

The Church of St Martin in Horní Bory is a Late Romanesque single-nave church and a prominent landmark of the municipality. It has been protected as a monument since 1958; its oldest surviving part dates from 1250 to 1280. During the summer season, the church is open for quiet contemplation and meditation.
