Litoměřice lies at the confluence of the Elbe and Ohře rivers, at the transition between the mountains of České středohoří and the fertile Polabská Lowland.
History
Since the 10th century, Dómský Hill was home to an original princely and Přemyslid hillfort complex covering approximately 6 hectares, which has disappeared without a trace. Around 1057, Prince Spytihněv II founded the St. Stephen’s Chapter on Dómský Hill. The present-day Cathedral of St. Stephen was built in the early Baroque style between 1664 and 1668 after the former church had been demolished between 1662 and 1664.
Culture
The Litoměřice Diocesan Museum is located on Mírové Square in a originally Gothic house bearing the year 1513 on its gable. Since 1995, works from the collections of the Diocese of Litoměřice have been on display there. The Puppet Gallery is housed in a Gothic tower that was formerly part of Litoměřice’s fortifications and displays more than 250 puppets and fairy-tale sets. The Karel Hynek Mácha Memorial includes an exhibition in the room of the house Na Vikárce where the poet lived and died on 6 November 1836.
The exhibition “Důl Richard v proměnách času” is accessible in an approximately 160-metre-long underground passage beneath the town hall and documents the history of the nearby Bídnice Hill. Along the passage, information boards provide details in Czech, German and English. Dílna ručního papíru offers guided tours that begin on the hour at 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00.
Things to Do
Litoměřice Castle houses an exhibition providing an overview of the history of Czech viticulture. It also offers wine-tasting tours, which must be booked at least one or two days in advance. The Litoměřice Wine Trail officially begins in the courtyard of Litoměřice Castle, is just over 15 km long and includes nine stops with information boards. By prior telephone arrangement, visitors can visit local winemakers along the wine trail and taste their wines.
The Hněvice–Litoměřice section of the Elbe Cycle Route runs mostly along a cycle path and partly on quiet Class III roads.
