Žitenice can be traced back in history to Žitenice Chateau and its fortress. The fortress is first mentioned in 1477.
History and Architectural Heritage
The Church of St. Peter and Paul was built in 1768–1769 by the master builder E. Kondel. Access to the courtyard of Žitenice Chateau is through a stone gate bearing the year 1699; it is probably attributed to Giulio Broggio.
The historic site “Theresienstadt concentration camp and ghetto” is located in the immediate vicinity of Žitenice. Hrad Střekov Castle is also located in the surrounding area. Further afield in the Žitenice region are the ruins of Hazmburk and Hrádek.

The Hibsch Educational Trail is a circular route with 13 stops. Hibschova jeskyně is an artificially created sandstone cave formed by the extraction of stone and sand. The cave can easily be explored with a flashlight.
