Velenov lies among the peaks of the Drahanská vrchovina highlands, surrounded by extensive forests. Along the eastern edge of the village flows the Orlový potok stream, which empties into a southeastern bay of the Boskovice Reservoir.
Nature and Landscape
The cadastral area of Velenov includes the Suchý recreation area and Sušský Pond. Thus, both the recreation area and the pond lie within the same municipal cadastral area as the village.
Culture
In the centre of Velenov stands a municipal belfry with a bell that was purchased after the war. House No. 10 is built from hewn beams. A white marble plaque is attached to a sandstone pedestal at a cross in Velenov. Its inscription reads: “Věnován ke cti a chvále Boží od mládenců a pannen VELENOVSKÝCH 1914”.
Views and Events
From the Vyhlídka na Číhátkách Ptáčníka Velena viewpoint, the panorama stretches across the Českomoravská vrchovina, Kunštátsko and Boskovicko regions as far as Boskovice Castle. The viewpoint includes a fire pit where visitors can grill sausages, provided this is permitted under the conditions applicable there. The Vyhlídka na Číhátkách Ptáčníka Velena viewpoint was opened to the public on 20 November 2010.
Velenov hosts the traditional November hike “Pochod kolem katastru” around the municipality’s cadastral boundary. The municipality’s events calendar also lists the “Pohár Drahanské vrchoviny – kola” for September.
Festivals and Culinary Delights
This year’s edition of the VESUF Fest takes place at Pastýřská louka between Suchý and Velenov. At VESUF Fest, more than 50 types of beer from over 20 small breweries, as well as food, are available throughout the weekend.
Surroundings
In the immediate surroundings west of Velenov lies the Vratíkov Nature Reserve, a karst area with several inaccessible caves. A significant archaeological site is located in the immediate vicinity near Sklep Cave. Tools used by Magdalenian hunters and bones of prehistoric animals were discovered there.
