Austerlitz: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The permanent exhibition “Slavkov and Europe in the Age of the Napoleonic Wars” is open to visitors in the former stables of Slavkov–Austerlitz Castle. On display are original personal belongings of Napoleon Bonaparte, including his personal sabre and a travel necessaire he used before the Battle of Slavkov.

History

The municipal heritage conservation zone of Slavkov u Brna preserves the cultural-historical, architectural, urban-planning and natural values of the originally medieval, later modern historic town centre. The town hall was built in the Renaissance style, but has a Gothic core and is considered practically the oldest building in the town. Panský dům is a Renaissance building with a Gothic core that was later modified in the Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Above the entrance, a Renaissance grille with plant and animal motifs and the coat of arms of the Kounic family has been preserved.

Preserved remains of the town walls can be found particularly by the cemetery, near the former Clock Gate complex and by the castle garden. The memorial to the victims of the world wars consists of two slabs of deep-black granite.

Remembrance and Faith

The Parish Church of the Resurrection of the Lord is a late Baroque building by Jan Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg. The cemetery chapel of Saint John the Baptist “na Špitálce” stands on the site of a hospital built by the Teutonic Order in the 13th century; its present form dates from 1743. Beneath the southern part of the chapel is the Kounic family crypt, built in 1795 by Arnošt Kryštof Kounic. It contains seven coffins, and in 1890 it was confirmed that the mortal remains of Chancellor Václav Antonín Kounic were among them.

The Chapel of the Holy Cross at the castle was built during the final construction phase of Slavkov Castle under Václav Antonín Kounic. It completes the southern wing of the castle and extends through all above-ground floors. It is accessible as part of the “Historic Halls” castle tour. The original Kounic crypt was built in the south-western part of the castle park in the second half of the 17th century for non-Catholic members of the Kounic family.

A new Chapel of Saint Urban was built on the old foundations between 1858 and 1861. The Chapel of Saint Urban is an architecturally and art-historically valuable building and a prominent landmark above Slavkov u Brna.

Places and Routes

The 15.5-hectare castle park of Slavkov u Brna is one of the most significant historic gardens in Moravia. Admission to the castle park is free. The illustrated tour guide Slavkovský Špacírek is dedicated to the town’s important sights and monuments and includes eleven stops.

Slavkov u Brna lies on the Brno–Veselí nad Moravou railway line; the railway station is approximately 1.3 km from Slavkov–Austerlitz Castle.

Leisure

A six-hole practice golf course is available in the lower part of the castle park. The Austerlitz Golf Resort also operates an 18-hole golf course in Slavkov u Brna. You can play golf there all day without membership in a golf club or proof of a handicap, for a small fee.

Koupaliště Slavkov has a 50-metre swimming pool, a non-swimmer pool and a children’s pool.

Town Life

Dominik Ondřej Count Kounic had a manufactory built in Slavkov for the production of fine cloth. The Kounic manufactory produced mill cloth from 1706; production ended in 1716.

The present Neo-Romanesque synagogue stands on the site of the original Jewish synagogue. The latter has been documented since the 15th century and was demolished in 1857. Slavkovský pivovar continues the town’s long brewing tradition.
