Ostrovánky: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Stonehenge Ostrovánky consists of 16 sandstone menhirs from Dubenec near Jaroměř arranged in a circle. The structure has a diameter of 24 metres; the site is freely accessible without restrictions and free of charge.

Landscape

Ostrovánky lies in a gently undulating hollow on both sides of the road between Kyjov and Ždánice. The Sobůlský stream rises at the upper end of the village and flows into the Kyjovka below Kyjov. From the hills above Ostrovánky, there are views across the Moravian Slovakia region. The Kyjov Wine Trail runs through the village from Bukovany via Ostrovánky to Nechvalín.

Culture and History

Ostrovánky was first mentioned in written sources in 1141. Four archaeological sites have been discovered in the cadastral area of the village. Local customs also form part of its cultural heritage: the traditional dress of Ostrovánky belongs to the northern Hanácko-Slovácká region. Other traditions include the raising of the maypole, meetings of men’s and women’s choirs from the surrounding area, cimbalom music, and the tradition of the St Wenceslas traditional-dress fair.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is the oldest building in Ostrovánky and dates from 1882. It was built by the married couple Sadílek from Ostrovánky and was declared a cultural monument in 2004. The Chapel of St Wenceslas was built as a small church in 1929 and consecrated in 1931. Inside is a painting of St Wenceslas by Jano Köhler.

Places of Remembrance

The 650-metre-long Alej vzpomínek lies on the road between Bukovanský mlýn and Ostrovánky. It was planted in 2017 as a memorial avenue for relatives who are no longer among the living. The trees of the Alej vzpomínek belong to 161 families from the area around Bukovany and bear the history of their ancestors. Above the avenue rises an entrance gate to the Cesta českých panovníků; access to the small viewing platform is free of charge.

On the outskirts of Ostrovánky, in the direction of Bukovany, stands the Štěpán Novák Memorial. Its inscription records that Štěpán Novák was born in Ostrovánky on 20 November 1898 and fell on the Italian front on 9 September 1917.
