In Kuřim, church history, underground passages dating from the end of the Second World War, and paths across wooded hills come together.
Culture and History
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Kuřim was founded in 1226 by King Přemysl Otakar I and originally built in the Romanesque style. After being plundered by the Swedes at the end of the Thirty Years’ War, it was rebuilt in its present late Baroque form between 1766 and 1772. It is also a venue for cultural events, particularly organ and singing concerts.
The original fortress of Kuřim was converted into a Renaissance château between 1592 and 1594. The castle courtyard hosts public celebrations, music and theatre performances, and summer cinema screenings. The exhibition “Kuřim – Na spojnici cest” presents the history of the town of Kuřim from the Stone Age onwards. Its entrance is located in the castle courtyard of Kuřim Château at Křížkovského 48/2.
The Water Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk stands at the foot of Kuřimská hora hill. A spring emerges from a niche in the lower part of the chapel. The local history also includes the Četnická stanice, a gendarmerie station from the period of the First Republic, where a group of history enthusiasts presents the history of the gendarmerie. Various historical events focusing on life during the First Republic take place at weekends.
The Kuřim tunnels form an underground system of passages that originated at the end of the Second World War. During the bombardments and the final battles at the end of April and beginning of May 1945, they served as a shelter for 2,000–3,000 residents of Kuřim and the surrounding municipalities. Paths and Landscape
The Zárubou a Horkou educational trail leads over the summits of the two wooded hills, Záruby and Horky, above Kuřim. It was established in 2005 and has seven stations with carved educational panels. The stations cover the landscape around Kuřim, local development, views of the summits of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, and extinct species.
The Kuřimská hora educational trail is 1.6 kilometres long and designed for approximately 1.5 hours of leisurely walking. Ten panels focus on forestry and natural-history topics and are complemented by interactive elements. The trail is accessible to pedestrians and cyclists, is considered moderately difficult, and is suitable for families with small children and seniors.
Srpek Pond lies in the western recreational zone of Kuřim and is considered a walking route around a biotope. Several cycle paths around the pond connect it with the surrounding villages.
Water and Leisure
Aquapark Wellness Kuřim has a leisure pool with a wild-water channel as well as a swimming pool with four lanes. The outdoor pool in the summer area of Wellness Kuřim offers a 50-metre pool, a 10-metre family slide, and a children’s paddling pool. The outdoor pool complex also includes two beach volleyball courts.
