Dolní Dunajovice reveals its special character where local history, landscape and winegrowing come together.

History and Culture

Dolní Dunajovice was first mentioned in writing in 1183 and was granted market-town status with the right to hold two annual markets at the beginning of the 15th century. The parish church of St Giles has stood on a hill in the centre of the village since the beginning of the 16th century. A pillory dating from the early 18th century has been preserved nearby; the church also houses altar paintings by the painter Jan Stern (1716–1775).

Dům Dr. Karla Rennera was built in 1999–2000 on the site of Karl Renner’s birthplace. The hall can be rented for training sessions, seminars and exhibitions. In the same building, TIC Dolní Dunajovice, Poštovní 189, 691 85 Dolní Dunajovice, provides tourist information as well as information about cultural events.

Landscape and Nature

The Dunajovické kopce NPP extends into the cadastral area of Dolní Dunajovice. Its ridge offers views in all directions; over the course of the year, at least 380 species of vascular plants may occur there.

The educational trail through the Dunajovické kopce provides information about the natural and historical features of the Dunajovické kopce NPP area. It begins at a car park west of Dolní Dunajovice below Velká Slunečná and is a circular route that returns to its starting point.

Wine and Local Life

Vinařství Tichý is a family winery in Dolní Dunajovice and offers guided wine tastings for groups of 10 or more. The Museum of Winemaking displays historical tools used by winegrowers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries; its exhibition is supplemented by text and visual materials.

The first Dunajovické vinné trhy took place on Sunday, 24 November 1929.
