The Horusická blata nature reserve is a breeding ground for many protected waterbirds.

Nature

The Horusická blata nature reserve protects shore vegetation with reed and mannagrass stands, willow scrub, transitional bogs, and sedge meadows on the western shore of Horusický rybník and in its floodplain. Horusický rybník is an important year-round resting place for migratory waterbirds, especially in spring and autumn.

In the wider regional surroundings of Horusice lies Hůrka Mountain. The Za Humny hill near Žíšov u Veselí nad Lužnicí is in the immediate vicinity of Horusice. The U Lůsů hill near Ponědrážka is also in the immediate vicinity of Horusice. The U Výra hill near Val u Veselí nad Lužnicí is located in the surroundings of Horusice.

History

The chapel on the village green in Horusice is a listed landmark in the centre of the settlement.

Horusický rybník was created in 1512 on the Bukovský potok stream based on a design by Štěpánek Netolický; the village of Oslov previously stood on its site.

Things to Do

The Veselské pískovny comprise five gravel lakes created by gravel extraction between 1952 and 1986, covering 240 hectares between Veselí nad Lužnicí, Horusice, and Vlkov in the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area and Biosphere Reserve. The Veselské pískovny can be reached by car, bicycle, and on foot.

The Veselské pískovny educational trail is an 8 km circular route along the shores of two lakes, providing information about the local fauna and flora, sand and gravel extraction, and geological conditions. Visiting the Veselské pískovny educational trail is recommended year-round.

There is a weather-dependent snack stand serving drinks and food at the Veselské pískovny.
