Týn nad Vltavou combines historic sites with natural history exhibitions and leisure activities. In the town museum, housed in the former château in the upper part of the square, you can see Bohemia’s largest collection of moldavites. There is also an exhibition on puppetry commemorating Matěj Kopecký.

Culture and History

The notable sights include the Vltavotýnské podzemní chodby underground passages. This historical and technical monument is open to the public as part of guided tours with commentary. The publicly accessible tower of St. James’ Church houses an exhibition of paintings. St. Vitus Church is an early Baroque building dating from 1681 to 1682.

The more recent Salt House has also been preserved as a protected cultural monument. Its façade is decorated with frescoes of mermaids and lions with salt barrels, probably dating from the early 19th century. A second Salt House was built on the left bank of the Vltava as early as 1708.

The Týn nad Vltavou Town Gallery focuses on art disciplines connected with the world of books or texts. Its exhibition programme is occasionally supplemented by painting or photography exhibitions. The open-air stage, built in 1983 and equipped with a revolving stage, is used for theatre performances, concerts and music festivals. During the summer season, the Vltavan theatre group regularly organises performances by local and visiting ensembles there.

Nature

The Semenec Museum is a four-hectare natural history park with games, educational activities, adventure challenges and activities for children. Its park collections include native and exotic plants, rocks and fossils.

The Semenec lookout tower, built in the 1930s, is five metres high and offers views of the Vltava and the entire town of Týn nad Vltavou.

Leisure and Trails

Since August 2025, Týn nad Vltavou has had a disc golf course above the Hlinky Reservoir. It is freely accessible every day and suitable for all age groups. Disc golf discs can be borrowed during opening hours from the tourist information centre upon presentation of an identity card and payment of a refundable deposit of CZK 100.

Excursion boats operate from Týn nad Vltavou on round trips to the confluence of the Vltava and Lužnice, continuing to the Kořensko Reservoir and back. At the tip of this confluence are wayside shrines, locally also called Semenecká kaple, although they are not a chapel.

Velký Depot can be reached on foot from the Hlinecké sídliště residential area in Týn nad Vltavou via an avenue running parallel to the road to Veselí nad Lužnicí. In the Na Šancích forest, turn left and you will reach the Baroque sculptural group after approximately 0.5 kilometres. The Baroque sandstone group at Velký Depot commemorates the disaster that occurred at the camp there on 21 June 1753.
