Trhové Sviny: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Trhové Sviny lies at the confluence of the Trhosvinenský and Farský potok streams. Here, the landscape transitions from the Třeboň Basin to hilly terrain in the direction of Šumava. At the same time, Trhové Sviny is a starting point for hiking trails into the Slepičí hory, which are less than 10 kilometres away.

Landscape and trails

A notable excursion destination is the Velký rybník natural swimming area on the outskirts of Trhové Sviny in the direction of Nové Hrady. The pond is 1.5 kilometres from the town centre and can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car. There is a seasonal snack stand on site.

The 63.7-kilometre cycling tour “K rodišti Jana Žižky z Trocnova” also passes through Trhové Sviny. It is described as a moderately difficult full-day tour.

Culture and history

At the centre of the Městská památková zóna Trhové Sviny is a square with a town hall and burgher houses with arcades. The square is also home to a hexagonal stone fountain dating from 1868.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was originally built in the early Gothic style and later remodelled in the late Gothic style. Inside are a Baroque altar and the late Gothic “Trhovosvineská Madonna” from 1520. The birthplace of Karel Valdauf is now a museum.

In the vicinity of Trhové Sviny, the pilgrimage Church of the Holy Trinity was built between 1708 and 1710 as a Baroque church with a central floor plan, three altars and a hexagonal ambulatory. Buškův hamr, a preserved water-powered hammer mill dating from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, is also located nearby. The complex includes a forge, historic tools, a drop hammer, a grinding machine and a bellows, all powered by three water wheels.

Buškův hamr also houses the exhibition “Řemesla (nejen) na vodě” about crafts and craftspeople in Trhové Sviny and the surrounding area. Traditionally, the Kovářské dny event is also held in the vicinity on the third weekend of August, featuring demonstrations of blacksmithing, a craft market and an entertainment programme.

A triangular chapel in the vicinity of Trhové Sviny contains a spring traditionally believed to have healing powers for eye ailments.

Information and events

The Trhové Sviny Information Centre provides visitors with information about the town and its surrounding area, both nearby and farther afield. It organises exhibitions as well as educational, cultural and sporting events for visitors and local residents.

From September to December, the Městské kulturní středisko Trhové Sviny offers six evenings featuring theatre, humour and music.

Other places

The places Locenice, Vidov, Vrábče, Lipí, Střížov, Holasovice, Branischen and Schmiedgraben are also part of exploring the wider surroundings.
