Straz Nad Nezarkou: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Stráž nad Nežárkou lies on the Nežárka River in a landscape of wet meadows, ponds, and streams. The town brings together architectural history, theatrical tradition, and the memory of Ema Destinnová.

Culture and History

The focal point is Stráž nad Nežárkou Chateau, a Baroque feudal manor house. It was created through the extensive reconstruction of a Gothic castle founded in the 13th century by the Vítkovci family. Ema Destinnová settled at the chateau at the height of her fame. She also performed on the stage of the local theater and was appointed an honorary member of the theater association of Stráž nad Nežárkou in 1917.

The theater hall of the community center is also part of the town’s living history: performances have been held there since 1880, and theater is still performed at this location today. The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul was first mentioned as a parish church in 1361. The chapel of St. Michael was probably added to the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul during the reconstruction of 1413.

The town’s historic character also includes the bell tower and several fountains. The bell tower’s current appearance dates from 1861; it was probably originally a defensive bastion of the outer bailey of Stráž Castle. The fountains include two on Ema Destinnová Square and one on Malé náměstí. They date from the early 19th century.

The Jewish cemetery “Stráž nad Nežárkou – Pístina” lies approximately 2 km west of Stráž nad Nežárkou on the edge of the forest. The cemetery is locked; a key can be borrowed from the Stráž nad Nežárkou municipal office.

Pivovar Stráž offers a connection to the local history of beer. The brewery builds on the history of brewing beer in Stráž nad Nežárkou from the mid-16th century until 1926. The Nežárka cycling route is suitable for trekking bikes.
