Smrzov: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Smržov tells a multifaceted story through its ponds and chapels. The first written record of the village dates back to 1367. At that time, Ješek z Kosovy Hory, the then owner of Lomnice, had the fields and meadows of the inhabitants of Smržov flooded in order to enlarge Dvořiště Pond.

History

The village’s historical heritage also includes small chapels that Jan Adolf Schwarzenberg had built in Smržov, in other surrounding villages and in the fields in 1660. They were known as maradasky and commemorated the suffering of the local population.

A broader context can be seen in the Rožmberská rybniční soustava. It is an exceptionally valuable technical monument and documents both the outstanding development of early modern pond management in South Bohemia and the extensive economic activities of the important Rožmberk noble family. The complex was created over the course of the 16th century as a system of interconnected ponds fed by a system of artificial waterways.

Nature

Koclířov Pond near Smržov was created during the time of Štěpánek Netolický. The connection between the ponds via the Zlatá stoka was already used at that time. Vydymač Pond is located directly in the municipality of Smržov.

The extensive forests that stretch almost as far as Hluboká nad Vltavou are also home to the historic Žižkův dub. According to tradition, the later Hussite military commander is said to have secretly met with his companions there.

Culture

The village contains several small reminders of its religious history. The larger Návesní kaple se zvoničkou in Smržov is very well maintained and enclosed by a fence. The Výklenková kaplička sv. Jána in Smržov is also very well maintained.

The Rybářské závody in Smržov took place for the 26th time in 2023 and for the 27th time in 2024.

Getting Around

The Naučná stezka Na Blata u Mazelova – trasa A follows the yellow trail marking to Dvořiště Pond and then continues through Smržov to Lomnice nad Lužnicí. The route is 48 km long, an easy circular trail, and takes 3.5 hours. Its starting point can be reached by car or train.

Baštýřův krmelec is located at Dvořiště Pond, just before the access road to the dam. It is a suitable place to stop during walks and bike rides around Lomnice nad Lužnicí and Smržov.
