Landscape
Olešná developed in a valley around the Velký potok and on the banks of the Vltava. The small stream flows through the built-up area of the village. The Vltava forms the western boundary of the municipality of Olešná; the right bank between river kilometres 183.4 and 185.5 is affected.
Bridges and Structures
In the vicinity of Olešná, the Podolský Bridge on the Písek–Tábor road spans the Vltava. It was built between 1939 and 1943 and is 510 metres long. Olešná also has a listed bridge over the Velký potok.
The Skály viewpoint is located about 1 kilometre south of Olešná in the surrounding area. From there, views extend over the Vltava in the Orlík Reservoir. The railway bridge near Červená nad Vltavou was also built in the vicinity between 1886 and 1889; it is 253 metres long.
Culture and History
At Chřešťovice, in the vicinity of Olešná on the left bank of the Vltava, stands the Church of Saint John the Baptist, dating from the 14th century. In the past, it was reached from Olešná by ferry across the Vltava.
Five kilometres southeast of Olešná, the Tábor (Burkovák) mountain lies in the surrounding area. It is considered a Celtic sacred site as well as a Bronze Age and Hallstatt-period burial site. The Church of Saint Bartholomew in the surrounding area dates from 1190 and was relocated above the flood level in 1960 because of the construction of the Orlík Reservoir.
Paths and Water
The Písecká Smoleč–Strouhy–Podolsko tourist route runs through the area of Olešná and connects the most attractive places with natural sights. Existing hiking and cycling trails run along the shores of the Orlík Reservoir. The Vltava and the Orlík Reservoir are considered the central potential for recreational use of the Olešná area.
In the wider surroundings of Olešná, the Orlík Reservoir particularly attracts people interested in water sports and sailing.
Village Life
The Skalica sports complex in Olešná includes sports grounds with courts and a children's playground.
Traditional events in Olešná included, among other things, the burning of witches, erecting the maypole, summer sports days, children's events, fishing events, and reunions of former residents.
