Culture and history

The Church of St. Bartholomew in Kunžak was first mentioned in 1370 and acquired its present appearance after being rebuilt following the fires of 1742 and 1808. The five-storey prismatic tower is 24.8 metres high, was added in 1556 and is topped with a Renaissance cupola. Behind the church stands the rectory, built in the Neoclassical style in 1796.

In front of the church tower, the monument erected in 1933 commemorates the victims of the First World War. It bears the legionnaire statue created by the sculptor Karla Vobišová-Žáková (1887–1961), who was born in Kunžak. The townscape also includes five protected wayside shrines: two stand in the park near the church, and three remain at their original locations.

House No. 63 is a rare surviving example of an older type of regional vernacular dwelling. Kunžak developed at a crossroads of trade routes; Velké Podolí is considered the oldest part of the town. Below the school stands Kunžak’s originally largest stone fountain, dating from 1815.

Landscape and nature

The Česká Kanada area is bounded by Kunžak, Nová Bystřice and Slavonice and was declared a nature reserve in 1994. Komorník Pond covers 56 hectares, is three kilometres long and was created in 1575 by Zachariáš of Hradec. In this area, it is one of the bodies of water that are popular bathing spots in summer.

The Javorka spring is located on Bystřická Street in Kunžak at an elevation of 634 metres. Vysoký kámen reaches 738 metres and is the highest point in the vicinity of Kunžak. About one kilometre west of the town, an area of 0.11 hectares is protected as a nature monument because of the distinctive occurrence of common juniper; its gene pool is protected.

Hiking trails

The Czech Canada Trail reaches Kunžak about three kilometres from Krvavý Pond via a quiet road. From the Kunžak section of the Czech Canada Trail, the route follows red-marked hiking trails through a gorge and the Kunžacký Forest towards Vysoký kámen. Despite the effects of the bark beetle infestation, the landscape is considered picturesque.

The former balancing rock Bývalý viklan Trkal is located about one kilometre from the village of Suchdol u Kunžaku and is easily accessible via a marked blue hiking trail.
