Horní Slatina: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Horní Slatina lies in the northern foothills of the Jemnice Basin, in the valley of a right-bank tributary of the Želetavka. The village is also located at the confluence of two streams that flow out of the small depression.

Nature and landscape

The settlement lies at the foot of the Slatinské kopce ridge. Behind Horní Slatina are wet and peat meadows on the edge of a coniferous forest. These wet meadows form the source area of a watercourse that feeds Horní rybník. Numerous notable plant and animal species occur in the wetland.

A memorial lime tree near the Church of St Giles is mentioned in a chronicle from 1717. The Slatinská lípa is officially designated as a protected memorial tree.

Churches and monuments

The single-nave Church of St Giles is originally a Romanesque building from the first half of the 13th century. It was remodelled in the Baroque style before 1717, and an extension was added in 1833.

The niche chapel of St Anthony dates from the mid-19th century. It has an elongated, segmental-arched vaulted niche closed by a modern iron grille, and is protected as a monument.

A cast-iron cross from the Bolíkov ironworks, dating from 1836, stands in the cemetery of Horní Slatina.

History of the castle fortress

The castle fortress of Horní Slatina probably already existed around the middle of the 13th century. In 1589, it was mentioned as abandoned. Today, only faint terrain traces of the fortifications are discernible at the site of the castle fortress.

The mountains of Modrácký kopec, Kleniční, Špičák and U Obrázku are located around Horní Slatina. The Church of U Svaté Magdalena is situated in the immediate vicinity of Horní Slatina. The churches of U Svatého Křiže and Svatá Markéta are also located in the surrounding area. In the wider regional area around Horní Slatina is Roštejn Castle [Doupě] with its lookout point.

The nearest railway stations to Horní Slatina are Jemnice and Dačice. Visitors to the cemetery of Horní Slatina can park on the old road behind the bus stop.
