Nature and Culture
The Otava shaped the historical life of Horní Poříčí and Dolní Poříčí. For a long time, freshwater pearl mussels were found in the river; their harvesting was discontinued there in 1908 and was not resumed afterwards. Timber from the Šumava forests was transported along the Otava as far as Prague; the first written reference to timber rafting dates back to 1316.
The river is also linked to the history of technology: a Francis turbine installed in the mill building in Dolní Poříčí supplied Dolní Poříčí and Horní Poříčí with electricity from 1919 onwards. The Otava is used for sport fishing and water sports.
