Dolní Újezd: Apartments and Holiday Homes

Dolní Újezd lies in gently undulating terrain on both sides of the Desná valley. A special way to discover the local sights is the Heritage Circuit of Sculptural and Architectural Monuments through Dolní Újezd and its surroundings: it includes 32 stops and is approximately 33 km long, of which 8 km forms an inner loop through the town.

Culture and History

The single-nave parish church of St Martin in Dolní Újezd is central to the town’s history. It was originally a Romanesque gallery church from the first half of the 13th century. The Gothic presbytery was added in the second half of the 14th century. During the expansion in the 16th century, a sacristy and a northern porch were added; the Renaissance portal on the south side dates from the same period. Another historic landmark is the stone structure known as Pražský most, built in 1868.

Among the prominent monuments is the Monument to the Peasant Uprising, a monumental sculpture made of Hořice sandstone commemorating the peasant uprising of 1680. It was created by the sculptor Otakar Velínský based on a design by Jan Štursa and unveiled on 14 July 1914; more than 15,000 people are said to have attended the ceremony. The Marian Sculptural Group at Rovinka is a work by the important East Bohemian Baroque sculptor Jiří František Pacák, dating from 1737, and is considered a significant work of the High Baroque featuring elements of lyrical Rococo sentimentality. Several farmsteads from the 19th century have been preserved as examples of folk architecture.

Nature and Trails

Each stop on the Dolní Újezd Heritage Circuit has a numbered information board and a QR code. The code leads to descriptions of the monuments as well as directions to the next stop. KČT cycling route 4019, called Through the Smetana and Martinů Region, also passes through Dolní Újezd.

Festivals

The traditional Benátská noc takes place every year in early July at the volunteer fire brigade’s nature area in the Desná valley next to the swimming pool. The same venue also hosts Újezdské babí léto, a country and folk festival held annually in Dolní Újezd on the penultimate weekend of August. The grounds of the nature area are used as a campsite for the festival.
