Culture and History

In Řestoky, St. Wenceslas Church has retained its Late Romanesque architectural character despite later repairs and alterations. It is registered as an immovable cultural monument in the national heritage system and features traces of medieval wall paintings. During its restoration in 1901, a new altar dedicated to St. Wenceslas was acquired. The church had a 170-kilogram bell cast in 1492, which was saved from confiscation for war purposes.

A Baroque granary belonged to the local manorial estate. Its main section has a decorated façade and is in poor structural condition. The gable is decorated with stone vases; in the storage halls, shaped oak supports carry the beams. The fittings of the main door are considered an example of eighteenth-century metalwork.

The biographies of local residents also extend into various fields. The writer Helena Šmahelová was born in Řestoky on 14 July 1910. Her later works dealt primarily with the problems of young people, especially adolescent girls. Václav Škroup, the great-grandfather of the composer František Škroup, was also born in Řestoky and taught at the local school for a short time. Josef Jeremiáš worked here as a teacher, founder of the community gardens, chronicler and cultural reformer; he lived from 1808 to 1883.
