Osek Nad Bečvou: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Osek nad Bečvou lies on the right bank of the Bečva, in its valley and in a fertile landscape. The cadastral area of Osek nad Bečvou is also part of the protected area “Bečva – Žebračka”. There, the artificially created, slow-flowing and silted-up Strhanec Canal is a habitat of the thick-shelled river mussel (Unio crassus).

Nature and Activities

The Bečva also shapes the fishing opportunities in the locality: the Bečva 2 fishing ground extends from the weir at the railway station in Přerov to the old weir above Osek nad Bečvou. The Jadran fishing ground is also available to visitors in Osek nad Bečvou. Jadran is a non-salmonid fishing ground; the municipality of Osek nad Bečvou is listed as its user. It can be reached from Osek nad Bečvou, while driving is prohibited from Lipník nad Bečvou.

A cycle path runs along the Bečva River through Osek nad Bečvou and is also available to visitors. In addition, visitors can use a sports complex in Osek nad Bečvou.

History

The history of the locality dates back to the Middle Ages in documentary records: the oldest documentary evidence for Osek nad Bečvou is considered to be an entry concerning church revenues from 1322, preserved in a contemporary parchment missal of the local church. From the earliest times, the royal road “královská (strata regia)” from Vienna to the north ran through Osek nad Bečvou.

The historic appearance of the locality developed on both sides of the former royal road. The church, cemetery and school stand on the spacious village square formed by it. The historic trade route running through Osek nad Bečvou was called the Roman Amber Road and was used by merchants travelling north to the amber deposits.

Archaeological finds are also part of the locality’s history: a Slavic settlement with predominantly Slavic pottery from the 8th and 9th centuries was identified in the cadastral area of Osek nad Bečvou. Fragments of Linear Pottery and pottery from the Urnfield culture were also found.

Culture

In the centre of the locality stands the church “Kostel Povýšení sv. Kříže”, a High Baroque church on Gothic foundations with a cemetery. It was built between 1783 and 1791. The local cultural monument also includes the ensemble “Socha sv. Tadeáše a socha sv. Jana Nepomuckého”, a local Baroque sculptural work from 1748.

The chapel “Kaple sv. Vendelína” stands on a ridge in Osek nad Bečvou. At the chapel, passers-by can ring the bell from the Tomášková–Dytrychová bell foundry.
