Dřevohostice Castle is a four-wing Renaissance water castle built on the site of a water fortress that already stood there before 1368. It is considered one of the most important monuments of the Moravian Renaissance.

Culture and history

In the outer bailey of Dřevohostice Castle, valuable Baroque statues of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint John Sarkander stand on high plinths on either side of the upper gate. The outer bailey also houses a fire service museum.

The Renaissance Brethren bell tower in Dřevohostice is a five-storey building standing 25 metres high; its current form dates from 1581. The “Maria” bell in the Dřevohostice bell tower dates from 1721 and weighs 685 kilograms. In Novosady, in front of house no. 359, stands a statue of Saint Roch, a popular Baroque sculpture from the second half of the 18th century.

The Dřevohostice burial ground and the Dřevohostice-type jug are also well known to archaeologists.

The information centre at Dřevohostice Castle offers tours of the castle and the fire service museum and provides tourist maps and brochures. The official Dřevohostice transport website contains information on IDOS timetables for bus and rail services.

Nature and cycle paths

The Dřevohostickým lesem educational trail presents the natural and historical features of the forest north of Dřevohostice.
