Suchdol Nad Odrou: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Suchdol nad Odrou, the Museum of the Moravian Brethren is located in a preserved small farmstead in the Kravařsko region: a closed courtyard comprises the residential building on the right and the farm buildings on the left. Visitors can see how people lived and worked in the Kravařsko region a hundred years ago.

Culture and Local History

The museum addresses the 18th-century exile of 280 inhabitants of Suchdol nad Odrou to Herrnhut in Saxony. There, they renewed the Unity of the Brethren and founded mission settlements in all parts of the world. The museum’s Western exhibition is dedicated to Bohumil Kašpárek, known as “Hospodář”, and to the history of the Czechoslovak Pony Express. The military history exhibition deals with the investigation of aircraft crashes in North Moravia and Silesia, particularly those resulting from the aerial battle of 17 December 1944.

The exhibition on the history of the market town at the town museum covers the prehistoric era and the first settlement of the local region, the Middle Ages and the founding of Suchdol nad Odrou and the locality of Kletné, galena mining, the Teltschik family of judges, the economic development of the originally agricultural community, railway construction, industrial development and the history of the market town up to 1945, including notable local people. Visits to the town museum must be arranged in advance and last approximately 60 minutes.

Churches and Architectural Heritage

The Church of the Holy Trinity is a single-nave late Renaissance building from 1605 to 1614, with an artistically designed Baroque tower roof and a double tower orb.

The Evangelical Church was built from 1852 to 1858 under Senior Szepessy in the arcade style, based on a design by the Viennese architect Förster. It preserves interior furnishings in the original style, including an altar, pulpit, organ and baptismal font. The Baroque Catholic vicarage was built in 1730 based on a design by the Viennese architect J. L. Hildebrandt from 1730.

Nature and Landscape

Part of the cadastral area of Suchdol nad Odrou lies within the Poodří Protected Landscape Area. With some care and attention, unique plant communities and rare animal species can be observed there.

The surroundings of Kletné are suitable for recreation and pleasant walks. Visitors can see the remains of former ore mining and enjoy views over the Moravian Gate valley.

Trails and Water

The “Krajinou povodní” educational trail runs across meadows and unpaved paths and can be used on foot or by bicycle, and, in suitable snow conditions, also on cross-country skis. The Oder is navigable year-round from Suchdol nad Odrou.

Tradition and Railways

The annual Czechoslovak Pony Express ride is part of the local tradition of Suchdol nad Odrou. The town is also an important railway junction on the main Přerov–Bohumín line; trains depart from there in five directions.
