Nová Ves nad Popelkou combines a distinctive valley landscape with remarkable cultural heritage. As visitors enter the village, picturesque log houses welcome them, while the panorama of the village includes the ruins of Kumburk Castle.
Culture
The Baroque complex of the Church of Saint Procopius is at the center of the historic village landscape. It includes a chapel at the old cemetery, whose enclosing wall and gate have been preserved. The church was rebuilt in its present form between 1765 and 1769. Its oldest bell was probably cast in the 14th century.
The local rectory is also part of the village’s architectural history: it was built between 1787 and 1788, after a plan for it had already been drawn up in 1786. Preserved masonry on the ground floor of a water mill is considered the last evidence of one of the most interesting examples of vernacular architecture in the Podkrkonoší region.
The cultural life also includes the annual performance by the Tyl theatre company from Lomnice nad Popelkou in Nová Ves nad Popelkou.
Landscape
Nová Ves nad Popelkou lies in a broad valley running from west to east. The Popelka stream flows through its center. Císařova hůra rises on the northern side; at 547 meters, it is the highest elevation on this side. Its name derives from the owner of farm no. 24 between 1641 and 1860. These two locations offer beautiful views to the west, north, and east.
The Stará Paka–Mladá Boleslav railway line runs along the southern side of the village. Thus, in addition to the valley landscape, the characteristic transport and village views are also part of the scenery of Nová Ves nad Popelkou.
Exploring the Village
Cycle Route No. 4277 passes through Nová Ves nad Popelkou. At the upper end of the village, by the bridge over the Popelka, there is a sandstone statue of a water sprite with gilded detailing.
