Žandov lies in the valley of the Ploučnice.

Culture

The stone town fountain of Žandov is part of the townscape. It bears the town coat of arms and the year 1853 and is a national cultural monument. The fountain replaced an earlier wooden fountain in 1853 and was restored in 1997.

Another distinctive landmark is the sandstone column with a statue of Saint Sebastian. It is approximately 6 m high, not including the statue, which was temporarily kept in the church. The column also bears a German inscription in capital letters dated 1717.

The Church of Saint Bartholomew in Žandov is registered as an immovable cultural monument under registration number 18625 / 5-3460. In the Koruna House, the main corridor is a former passage to the courtyard where horses were changed. After 1918, the inn in the Koruna House was renamed from “U císaře rakouského” to “U Koruny”.

Nature

Stage II of the Výroční stezka Češka – Slunečná – Žandov is a 14 km-long hiking route of medium difficulty. It reaches Žandov via a blue-marked hiking trail through Radeč and along Dvorský kopec. After 1.5 km from Volfartice, the stage joins the paved cycle path No. 15 “Ploučnice, Varhany”.

The area of Žandov includes Zones I to IV of the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area. The Okolím Karlovských rybníků za poznáním educational trail is also located nearby. The marked, easy circular trail is 2 km long, includes seven stops and has an estimated viewing time of approximately one hour. Its information boards describe the history of the area as well as the lives of local aquatic and forest animals and the plants.

Geographical Location

The mountains Kozel, Dobrná, Ronov and Špičák are located around Žandov. In the wider regional surroundings are the historic site of Hirniskretzschen, Hrad Střekov Castle, the ruins of Starý Berštejn and the Postelwitzer Höhe viewpoint.

Events

The Žandovská desítka is an annual running event held in November; editions from 2014 to 2026 are listed for Žandov. The 2025 edition started at the Žandov swimming pool and followed a loop through the forest around the Karlovské rybníky.
