Veliš U Jičína: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In the centre of Veliš U Jičína stands a late Baroque monument comprising the complex of the Church of St Wenceslas. The present-day church was built from 1747 to 1752; its surroundings preserve several noteworthy architectural and historical points of reference.

Culture and Townscape

The complex of the Church of St Wenceslas includes an access ramp lined with statues and two chapels whose roofs are adorned with sculptures. The church stands on an artificially constructed terrace enclosed by a high wall. On the outside, this wall is faced with large, irregular sandstone blocks. In the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic, the Church of St Wenceslas is registered under number 22287/6-1429.

Designated monuments can also be found outside the church complex: the Šlik family crypt at the cemetery in Veliš is considered a monument of local significance. The same applies to the statue of the Immaculata at the crossroads to Vesec.

History on Veliš Hill

Veliš Hill is now a popular viewpoint. The castle on the hill was once considered one of the strongest castles in Bohemia; the Basel Compacts were kept there for a long time. In 1658, the destruction of Veliš Castle was decided. Today, only a few structural remnants of the castle remain on Veliš Hill.

Landscape and Trails

The Veliš castle ruins offer views of Jičín and the landscape of Český ráj. A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Jičín to the Veliš castle ruins over a distance of approximately 7 km. The observation pillar of Veliš is also part of the town's architectural character: it is made of bricks, is 10.5 metres high and has a cross-shaped floor plan.

In the wider regional surroundings of Veliš lies Mariánská zahrada, a unique Baroque designed landscape. Four chapels were built in the forests of the Velišský hřbet.
