Trautnau: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Trutnov lies in the valley of the mountain river Úpa and on the adjacent slopes in the wooded foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains. Its historic townscape, viewpoints, educational trails and cycling opportunities shape the destination’s diverse facets.

Townscape and history

The historic centre of Trutnov has been an urban heritage conservation zone since 1 November 1990. The buildings reconstructed after the 1861 fire retain extensive arcades and several Gothic cellars. Krakonošovo náměstí is home to the Old Town Hall from the 16th century, remodelled in the historicist style in 1861, as well as renewed historicist lighting and restored façades that evoke Trutnov around the turn of the 20th century. The dominant Baroque Church of the Virgin Mary was built between 1756 and 1782.

Art and town history

EPO1 is a contemporary art gallery in an industrial monument dating from 1914, with four exhibition halls. Each season, EPO1 presents three exhibitions taking place simultaneously; its accompanying programme includes openings, workshops and concerts. Muzeum Podkrkonoší offers permanent and temporary exhibitions, hosts openings and seminars, as well as regular Thursday meetings and lectures on various topics from the life and history of the town and its surroundings. The museum building stands on the foundations of a Gothic castle.

Galerie Draka presents the Trutnov dragon legend through a mechanical puppet theatre as well as sound and visual effects related to the dragon theme.

Landscape and views

The Eliška lookout tower is 24.5 metres high, stands at an elevation of 632 metres above sea level and is located in the grounds of the Stachelberg artillery fortress. From there, views extend towards Libavské sedlo, the Vraní, Jestřebí and Orlické Mountains, the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains and the Stachelberg fortress complex.

Educational trails and paths

The Nové Dvory–Babí educational trail leads through the school forest area of the Czech Forestry Academy in Trutnov and has 13 stations. It follows the Zámecký hřeben ridge and the southern and eastern slopes of the Baba peak, then continues through open countryside and offers views of the Rýchory Mountains and the varied landscape of the Vlčice Rocks.

The five-kilometre circular trail around Houska Hill above the Trutnov district of Bojiště is connected to the existing 1866 educational trail and is equipped with information boards and benches. The educational trail dedicated to the 1866 Battle of Trutnov can be explored on foot or by bicycle along two circular routes. The first circular route runs for 2.8 km from Krakonošovo náměstí via Šibeník to the Chapel of St John the Baptist, passes 12 information boards and is accessible all year round.

Cycling and forest activities

Trutnov Trails is a network of one-way mountain biking trails in the Čížkovy kameny area and the Jestřebí Mountains, with access from Lhota u Trutnova. The easiest trails at Trutnov Trails are intended for all visitors, including families with children.

The Podoby Rýbrcoula educational trail in Trutnov’s forest park begins at Na Struze Street and features seven statues of various Rýbrcoul figures, a dragon, a play feature and a rest area. For this educational trail, visitors can collect a blank map at the Trutnov tourist information centre, mark the Rýbrcoul symbols located at the stations and receive a Rýbrcoul magnet in return.
