Kostelec: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Kostelec hillfort complex, including its fortifications, covers approximately 13.5 hectares. Its fortifications were almost 1,500 metres long and enclosed an area of 12.20 hectares. The complex was established at a location offering good views of the entire Jičín Basin, including the Prachov Rocks.

Culture and History

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Kostelec is a branch church of Gothic origin. Its present appearance was created by a Renaissance rebuilding after the middle of the 16th century and a Baroque redesign in the middle of the 18th century. Next to the church stands a wooden bell tower built in the 1880s; the former bell tower was one storey higher and equipped with up to four bells.

The village square is home to a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from around the middle of the 18th century. The cross near the transformer bears the year 1756 and dates from the time of the Seven Years’ War. Behind the village there is a chapel that is a local landmark and is awaiting repair.

Landscape

Around the southern part of the Kostelec hillfort complex, a rampart up to 4.5 metres high and a ditch dug in front of it form the fortifications. The surviving southern fortification is visible along the village road as an earthen rampart more than 2.5 metres high.

Paths and Orientation

KČT cycle route no. 14 runs through Kostelec. The most suitable approach to Kostelec is via the road from Jičíněves. Access to Kostelec is not marked by any hiking trail or TZN.
